SATA drives - The proven connection standard offers versatile application options

The SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interface is a widely used standard for connecting hard disks and optical drives in servers, workstations and storage systems. In its third generation, the connection achieves a transfer rate of up to 6 Gbit/s, which is sufficient for many environments, and is supported by almost every motherboard due to its wide distribution. Depending on the requirements of the application, conventional HDDs (hard disk drives), often with high capacities, or SATA SSDs (solid state drives) can be connected, which enable faster access speeds.

SATA generations in ascending order by year of release and transfer rate:

  • SATA 1 (2000): 1.5 Gbit/s
  • SATA 2 (2005): 3.0 Gbit/s
  • SATA 3 (2009): 6.0 Gbit/s

In general, generations are backwards and upwards compatible with each other, with the lowest standard used limiting the achievable transfer rate. However, as both SATA 1 and SATA 2 with their comparatively low data rates are now largely obsolete, most available systems and drives support the faster SATA 3 (6G) standard.

The following generation, SATA Express (SATAe), based on a PCIe connection (PCI Express), was more capable due to the SATA 3.2 specification, but failed to gain acceptance. Limited to a maximum of two PCIe lanes for data transfer, the standard was already technically outdated when it was introduced and was quickly replaced by the NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) protocol and corresponding M.2 slots. In addition, SATAe was not designed for professional solutions such as servers and storage systems, where NVMe SSDs with U.2 and U.3 connectors are used as higher performance solutions.

SATA hard drives provide high compatibility and easy storage management

Compared to the SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) standard, which is also used in professional IT solutions, the SATA connection offers several advantages. For example, the drives are usually less expensive and easier to manage. In addition, an extra RAID controller is often not required as most systems come with the necessary connectors and a compatible backplane board as standard. Overall, although SATA hard drives offer lower transfer rates and fewer management options than SAS models, they are often ideal for less complex applications as an affordable and reliable solution with high storage capacity. Furthermore, SATA devices can be used on a SAS controller through support for the SCSI/ATA Translation Layer (SATL), whereas the reverse is not possible and SAS drives cannot be used on SATA connectors.

Refurbished SATA HDDs and SSDs for cost-effective adaptation to growing data volumes - ServerShop24

When expanding IT infrastructures of any size, a regular upgrade of the storage capacity is often unavoidable due to the constantly increasing data volumes. Used and carefully checked SATA HDDs and SSDs from our online shop are often an ideal alternative to new hardware to meet the requirements of many applications at an excellent price-performance ratio. The reuse of refurbished drives also makes a valuable contribution to the sustainable use of rare and increasingly scarce raw material resources worldwide and prevents perfectly functioning storage media from becoming electronic waste.
