The HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) ProLiant blade servers are high performance, space efficient server solutions designed for use in complex IT environments with changing requirements. A compact alternative to traditional rack servers, the BL series form factor enables optimised integration into HPE BladeSystem enclosures. In addition to the necessary cooling, the BladeSystem enclosure also provides the power supply with redundant power supplies, which allows for a very compact design of the server blades. Blade servers therefore combine high-performance server technology and scalable resources with low space requirements and high energy efficiency. The special arrangement of components within the blades means that more servers can be accommodated per rack, contributing to high performance density with maximum flexibility for expansion.

Different generations of ProLiant blade servers support up to two Intel Xeon CPUs (central processing units) from varying processor series, with access to large amounts of memory for high application performance. Expansion options via space-saving integrated mezzanine cards allow servers to be customised to meet individual requirements and to use expansion cards, such as controllers, with the required functionality. Connectivity to the existing network environment can be provided by compatible network cards in a separate FlexibleLOM slot, available in a range of models and transfer speeds.

Despite their compact form factor, HPE ProLiant BL series blade servers offer a variety of hard disk integration options for storage configuration. Depending on the generation, up to two conventional HDDs (hard disk drives) or the faster SSDs (solid state drives) can be used, with support for the space-saving 2.5" SFF (small form factor) format. SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) and SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) standards and the NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) protocol are supported for connecting hard disks, depending on the generation of the server and the RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) controller used. This means that a wide range of requirements for available storage space and achievable data transfer rate of the local storage can be met. To handle large amounts of data, BladeSystem enclosures can also be equipped with special storage blades that provide significantly more hard drive bays and allow mass storage to be expanded as required.
