Highest performance for your data-intensive applications with SAS SSDs
The increasing demands of modern data centres often require high data rates and benefit from low latencies in order to efficiently handle demanding applications. Traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) often reach the limits of their performance due to their technically limited read and write speeds.
Here, the implementation of solid state disks (SSDs) offers speed advantages due to fast flash memory and the elimination of moving parts and enables significantly higher performance for the fast processing of large datasets. The achievable data rate of the drives for read and write processes can be specified both in MB/s (megabytes per second) and in IOPS (input/output operations per second). Therefore, the standardised benchmark values allow easy comparison between SSDs of different types and manufacturers.
The classification of appropriate SSDs for your application
An SSD basically consists of a flash storage controller to manage the access and non-volatile flash memory as storage medium. Compared to conventional HDDs, however, the NAND chips of a solid state disk cannot be rewritten an infinite number of times, they have a limited lifespan and are subject to a certain amount of wear due to write cycles. The lifespan and ideal application range of an SSD depends primarily on the type of NAND memory cells used. A classification is made here between the memory types TLC, MLC and SLC with their specific advantages and disadvantages in the areas of capacity, lifespan and costs.
- TLC memory cells: highest capacity, lowest lifespan, low price
- MLC memory cells: high capacity, medium lifespan, higher price
- SLC memory cells: lowest capacity, highest lifespan, highest price
For usage in servers and storage solutions, specially optimised enterprise SSDs are the ideal choice. Unlike client SSDs, they are designed for continuous operation and can maintain their peak performance stable over longer periods of time. To achieve optimal performance and lifespan of the drives, enterprise SSDs are available for different application areas and feature storage characteristics adapted to the workload type.
- Write Intensive (WI): Workloads with a focus on write access
- Read Intensive (RI): Workloads with a focus on read access
- Very Read Intensive (VRI): Workloads with focus on continuous access
- Mixed Use (MU): Workloads with focus on read and write accesses
The classification of SSD drives into endurance classes is based on manufacturer specifications on durability with the values DWPD (Data Write Per Day) and TBW (Total Bytes Written), which in addition to a time limitation can also be part of the manufacturer's warranty. Therefore, it is important to select the appropriate SSDs for the respective areas of application, both for optimal application performance and for the preservation of warranty claims.
Enterprise SSDs with protection features for high reliability
To ensure increased reliability and advanced protection against data loss, enterprise SSDs often feature protection mechanisms. Powerfail support, for example, enables the detection of a power supply failure. In this case, integrated power storage capacitors temporarily bypass the power loss to complete outstanding writes before the SSD is switched off. This reduces the risk of damaged data sets after an unsafe power shutdown.
Furthermore, enterprise SSDs usually offer ECC error correction, which detects and corrects bit errors that occur. Depending on the SSD controller and firmware used, the range and function of the security features vary, whereby the drives are also suitable for critical applications with the highest security requirements and for the reliable processing of sensitive data, depending on the specification.
