Dell PowerEdge - Server solutions for different requirements

The US company Dell Technologies Inc. is one of the leading providers of IT solutions and offers a wide range of products for almost all areas of application. In addition to PCs and notebooks for private use, this also includes professional storage systems as well as workstations and servers in various model series for use in the corporate sector. The servers of the PowerEdge series are available in different form factors and configurations, and therefore represent solutions specifically designed for the respective area of application.

Find the right Dell PowerEdge server easily through unique designation

For identification and classification purposes, all Dell PowerEdge models have a unique designation, usually consisting of a letter and three or four numbers. This system has been in use since the 10th generation and contains various information about the format and performance of the servers. The letter at the beginning of the model designation defines the form factor of the server.

  • R: Rack servers for mounting in server cabinets or racks
  • T: Tower servers for use in offices and branches
  • M: Modular systems such as blade servers with high flexibility and scalability

For model designations with three numbers, the first digit stands for the number of existing processor sockets and represents the performance class of the systems.

  • 1 - 3: one CPU socket
  • 4 - 7: two CPU sockets
  • 8: two or four CPU sockets
  • 9: four CPU sockets

The second digit indicates the server generation, with 0 representing the 10th generation. With ascending numbers all further model generations are defined consecutively.

  • 1: 11th generation
  • 2: 12th generation
  • 3: 13th generation
  • 4: 14th generation
  • ...

The third digit indicates the supported processor manufacturer. The CPUs of the manufacturers Intel and AMD both require their own processor sockets. Socket 4189 can accommodate the Intel Xeon scalable processors of the third generation, while socket SP3 is required for the use of AMD EPYC CPUs from the first to the third generation.

  • 0: Intel processors
  • 5: AMD processors

On the example of a Dell PowerEdge R740 server, it can therefore be concluded that it is a rack server with two processor sockets from the 14th generation that can be equipped with Intel Xeon CPUs.

If, on the other hand, the model designation of a Dell server is made up of a letter and four numbers, this sometimes has a different meaning. The first digit after the letter indicates the class of the system and the range of functions of the integrated remote administration solution iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller).

  • 1 - 5: iDRAC Basic
  • 6 - 9: iDRAC Express

The second digit indicates the server generation, as in the naming convention with three digits. The third number provides information about the available processor sockets and the fourth number indicates the processor manufacturer.

Therefore, the example of the Dell PowerEdge R6415 server shows from the designation that it is a rack server with support for iDRAC Express from the 14th generation, which can be equipped in one CPU socket with processor models from the manufacturer AMD.

Rack Servers - Dell PowerEdge R-Series

The PowerEdge R-Series rack servers are designed for use in companies and data centres that require scalable and reliable systems with high performance. Various models, distinguished by chassis in different height units and configuration options, offer performance and features for many application areas. Due to further technological development, the performance of the systems increases with every generation, whereby the servers are basically classified into different model series depending on their optimal area of application. With ascending designation, the models differ, for example, in the number of processors, the possible size of the main memory and the number of bays for hard disks. Overall, the PowerEdge R series from Dell offers a wide range of servers for different applications and workloads.

  • PowerEdge R200

The entry-level model of the PowerEdge R series is often ideal for use in small businesses. The PowerEdge R200 rack server has one processor socket and can be equipped with RAM modules in four DIMM slots. The 19" chassis with one height unit (1 U) also offers space for up to four hard disks and can accommodate expansion cards in two PCI Express (PCIe) slots. This makes the system a cost-effective solution for less complex workloads and the provision of basic services.

  • PowerEdge R300

When the storage space and features of the entry-level model are not sufficient for the application's requirements, the PowerEdge R300 server offers expanded capabilities. The differences are, for example, the number of hard disk bays and the option to use redundant hot-plug power supplies for increased failure safety. This makes these models suitable for processing larger amounts of data or as application servers.

  • PowerEdge R400

More demanding workloads, such as running databases and business applications, require IT systems with sufficient computing power. The two-processor PowerEdge R400 models provide a solution for medium-sized businesses and are also suitable for virtualisation applications.

  • PowerEdge R500

When processing increasing amounts of data, 1U server solutions often reach their limits when a larger number of hard disks is required. This is where the PowerEdge R500 series comes in, offering much more expansion potential in a 2U chassis.

  • PowerEdge R600

The PowerEdge R600 server models combine the advantages of high performance and flexible customisation options in a small footprint. The motherboard in the compact 1 U chassis can accommodate two processors and, with numerous DIMM slots, enables a large memory expansion. The configuration with different drive cages also allows the required storage space to be flexibly adapted to high requirements.

  • PowerEdge R700

As 2U high-performance servers, the systems from the PowerEdge R700 model series frequently meet the very high demands of large companies and data centres. Versatile configuration options and high computing power as well as availability enable individual solutions for the efficient handling of enterprise workloads.

  • PowerEdge R900

As the top models of the R-series, PowerEdge R900 rack servers offer the highest performance, scalability and expansion potential in a four height unit (4U) chassis. A total of four processors provide their computing power and a memory expansion up to the terabyte range meets the highest requirements of almost any application. For applications in the areas of HPC (High Performance Computing), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), the systems can also be equipped with powerful graphic cards for computing acceleration and therefore offer versatile adaptation options for a wide range of workloads.

Tower Servers - Dell PowerEdge T-Series

PowerEdge T-Series tower servers are often ideal for use in small and medium-sized businesses that have limited space for a complex IT infrastructure.
