The manufacturer's technical documentation provides important information that should be followed to avoid problems with later upgrades. The devices also support iLO (Integrated Lights-Out), a proven remote maintenance solution that is implemented in specific versions depending on the generation and simplifies the administration and monitoring of the systems.

Because server hardware requirements vary widely by application, the HPE DL380's extensive configuration options enable customisation for a wide range of workloads. This includes virtualised environments as well as databases and enterprise applications. The most powerful systems can also be used for high performance computing (HPC). However, different configurations not only change performance, but also power consumption and the temperature generated by the components. The power supply and cooling of the servers are therefore crucial factors for reliable continuous operation at consistently high performance. To achieve this, systems can be equipped with redundant power supplies at different power levels, and CPU heatsinks and chassis fans designed to handle the heat generated by the hardware ensure optimised temperature control.

  • Processors

The motherboard supports up to two processors, with the HPE ProLiant DL380 using models from the Intel Xeon family. The CPUs (central processing units) are available in different performance classes that differ in the number of cores and the clock speed that can be achieved, and require specific processor sockets for installation depending on the chip generation.

  • Memory

For high application performance, servers also need sufficient amounts of high-performance main memory. The ProLiant DL380 models feature a large number of DIMM slots (Dual In-line Memory Module), which can be equipped with DDR RAM modules (Random Access Memory) and support ECC (Error Correcting Code) to reduce memory errors. Depending on the server generation, different memory standards can be used and the number of available slots may vary depending on the model and generation.

For example, a compatible Smart Array RAID controller (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) can be used to manage the installed hard drives. Depending on the model, different transfer protocols are supported for a wide range of HDD (hard disk drive) and SSD (solid state drive) hard disks:
