HPE ProLiant DL160 - The versatile 1U server

The ProLiant DL160 rack server from HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) is a cost-effective and often ideal solution for businesses of all sizes to reliably meet the demands of a wide range of workloads. The compact 1U chassis makes the most of available rack space, and the combination of powerful components delivers scalable performance and high reliability. Depending on the configuration, the systems are equipped with redundant power supplies for increased failsafety and efficient hardware cooling for continuous operation with constant performance, even under high load. The DL160 servers also meet the management requirements of modern IT infrastructures, with iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) providing a wide range of features for optimised server administration.

Dual processors and high memory capacity in the HPE ProLiant DL160

The dual-socket ProLiant DL160 server delivers compute performance comparable to larger HPE DL series devices, making it suitable for demanding applications and virtualisation. Depending on the server generation, the motherboard can accommodate two Intel Xeon CPUs (central processing units) from different processor series, which vary in the number of cores and clock speed depending on the model. For high application performance, the CPUs can also take advantage of extensive RAM expandability, which can be provided by various DDR RAM (Random Access Memory) standards with different memory speeds in up to 16 DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) slots. The proven ECC (Error Correcting Code) technology increases reliability for memory intensive applications such as databases, making the servers suitable for processing mission-critical data.

HPE ProLiant DL160 servers offer various storage configurations

HPE DL160 servers are available in a variety of chassis options to provide the storage space required for data and applications. Different drive cages allow the use of 3.5" LFF (Large Form Factor) or 2.5" SFF (Small Form Factor) hard disks, which are plugged into the server chassis using compatible trays. Depending on the device generation, both traditional HDDs (hard disk drives) and high-speed SSDs (solid state drives) are supported, allowing mass storage to be configured to suit the application. The embedded storage controller already provides basic functions for managing the hard disks, but a separate RAID controller (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) can also be added. Depending on the configuration, the required transfer protocols such as SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), or NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) are supported to meet both storage capacity and transfer speed requirements.

Expansion options for the HPE ProLiant DL160 server

Despite its space-saving form factor, the ProLiant DL160 server's slim 1U chassis offers a range of expansion options to meet individual requirements. Each model features PCI Express (PCIe) slots that can accommodate expansion cards such as controllers, graphic cards and network cards. Depending on the generation of the device and the optional accessories used, plug-in cards of different formats can be installed in the PCIe riser. In addition to low-profile cards, full-height and half-length models can be used, and a separate Flexible LOM slot for compatible network adapters is also provided. Depending on the server generation, it is important to note that devices support different standards with PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0, resulting in different achievable transfer speeds.

The HPE ProLiant DL160 server generations in overview

As part of the HPE ProLiant DL series, the DL160 models support different hardware standards depending on the generation of the server, which has a significant impact on the compatibility of components for expansion. When selecting a server, it is therefore essential to check the manufacturer's technical documentation for supported hardware such as processors and memory. In this way, a customised server can deliver the computing power required for the application as cost-effectively as possible, often allowing existing parts to be reused.
